Whiskeytown’s debut introduced the world to Ryan Adams and his early booze-soaked, twang-heavy country rock. “Drank Like a River” cranks and rolls with steely guitar and fiddle flourishes, as gang vocals chime in for the rollicking chorus. “Faithless Street” is a mellow honky-tonk weeper, but the bassline of “If He Can’t Have You” rumbles insistently along, accentuating the gravity of Adams’ signature theme: heartbreak. And the shuffling “Matrimony” gives Caitlin Cary the chance to flip the bird at marriage with a stunning vocal performance.
